The Big Inning
November, 2014
The purpose of this site is to have a place to showcase my writing. I am on a serious job search, and I do have samples from my work as a graphic designer and art director. But I offer companies bang for their buck -- a double threat, designer/writer package. If I'm campaigning on a theme of Mike Martinez the Marketing Communications God (or similar variations), then by golly, some samples of what I can write would be in order.
Collecting my early samples ( I started at The UCSD Guardian newspaper in 1987) for this site was quite a trick. I did have some painstakingly crafted reissues on my old web site a few years ago, but all my digital files vanished from the Guardian server in 2010. I really had to hustle, collecting old hard copy newspapers, brochures, magazines and even postcards to recreate samples.
In my career, I have written ad copy and direct mail brochures. I've spun descriptive text about the Guardian newspaper and UCSD campus marketing demographics. I've capsulized UCSD departments and local flavor for many generations of the Guardian Student Survival Guide. I've tossed out compelling pearls telling the world about UCSD events and student spirit convocations.
Early on, I was a featured contributor for The Guardian. My byline appeared atop a few full blown features and roughly two dozen film and music reviews and sports commentaries. I even coordinated layout design and illustration for some of my writing.
That's not all. From 2001-2009, I compiled events and wrote content for Guardian Weekly Campus Calendar. More recently I have researched and wrote real estate content as a marketing concierge for Homes Media Solutions (homes.com).
